Lauri Marjakangas (b. 1994) is a Helsinki-based composer and music producer originally from Oulu, Finland. He holds degrees from the Oulu Conservatory (electric guitar), Oulu University of Applied Sciences (music pedagogy), and the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki (composition).

 

Known for his versatility, Marjakangas works across folk, jazz, and contemporary classical music. His creative approach combines strong artistic vision with hands-on craftsmanship, often working in collaborative and interdisciplinary settings.​In addition to composing, Marjakangas has extensive experience in music production, particularly in concert recordings and studio albums.

 

His work includes dozens of premieres and reinterpretations of contemporary music—such as recordings of pieces by Juha Pisto (Wellamo), Jouko Tötterström (Ballatas and Interludes), and Sampo Haapamäki (Quarter-tone Accordion Concerto II).

 

He has also recorded guitar works by northern Finnish composers and piano music by Sibelius, and contributed to numerous albums and single releases across folk and popular genres.​

 

In 2025, Marjakangas was named the first Composer-in-Residence of the Oulunsalo Soi Festival, where his work is prominently featured.From 2025 to 2025, he leads the project Arctic 3D Soundscape – New Means of Expression in Extended Sound Realism, commissioned by the Contemporary Music Society Lokakuu and carried out in collaboration with Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The project focuses on integrating electroacoustic and traditional score-based composition techniques using a unique 23-channel hemispherical speaker system.​In 2026, Marjakangas will produce a children's music album featuring 30 new compositions and arrangements in Northern, Inari, and Skolt Sámi languages. The album is a collaboration between the children’s music orchestra Loiskis and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, with Marjakangas responsible for music production, arrangements, and post-production.

 

Marjakangas was awarded first prize in the 2023 Markku Johansson Arrangement Competition for his version of Sinua, sinua rakastan.​His music has been performed by ensembles such as Zagros Ensemble, Arktisk Filharmoni, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Oulu Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Helsinki Police Band and defunensemble.
